I went to the movies last night with my husband and we were going back and forth between seeing "Tree of Life" with Sean Penn and Brad Pitt or "Midnight in Paris" with Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, and an all-star cast in addition to the two leads. I haven't seen Kathy Bates in a movie in a long time so it was a pleasant surprise seeing her play Gertrude Stein. Owen Wilson was perfect for the lead role as Gil Pender, a writer from Hollywood who is very nostalgic and longs to belong to a time other than the one he is living in. Gil gets his wish at midnight each night, traveling back through time with various writers and painters. He meets many of his literary idols and famous painters, who through their conversations with the lead character reveal their flaws, and also their disdain and feelings of being born in the wrong era. It comes across as being a universal theme among artists in the movie.
I love the overall message, about being happy with where you are: in time, in your life, etc. and it doesn't come across as preachy at all. The best part of the movie for me was Gil's conversations with Hemingway, the Fitzgeralds, Salvador Dali, and Picasso's mistress. The cast is fantastic. If you get a chance to see this movie do it!
