"Body Aesthetic" W.G. Middleton at Twenty Two Gallery, Philadelphia

"Body Aesthetic" W.G. Middleton at Twenty Two Gallery, Philadelphia

Today is the day I gallery sit in Philadelphia. I love this day of the month, I've said this before. I enjoy it because I get to hear comments on artwork directly from the collectors: what they like, what they don't like, see what sells in this area of the country. It's also wonderful for me because once a month, when I arrive, a new show is waiting for me! The solo artist of the month has the entire front of the gallery and it looks SO very different every month. How lucky am I?

This month it is the "Body Aesthetic" by W.G. Middleton. It is a combination of sculptures of human exteriors interspersed with "electric sculptures" that are forms of glass lit with moving light. It is fascinating and very unique! William works in collaboration with James Harmon, a glass artist, and Dr. Mindy Weinstein, a Cell Biologist. So my guess is, with the involvement of a biologist, that the electric sculptures are fairly accurate depictions of the body parts they portray.

Here are some pictures from the gallery:

"Borman's Space and Loop of Henly" - glass, acrylic, wire; 30 x 30 x 60" $8000

This is an electric sculpture of the kidney. There are beautiful flashing lights throughout it that don't come across in a still picture, indicating fluids through the organ. It is captivating.

This is a picture showing his human forms, with an electric scupture of the retina between them.

A better shot of "Retina" $6000

This one is titled "Lost in Thought" -12 x 12 x 30" $1000

So, this show has been a pleasant surprise for me today! It is even more spectacular at night I've heard. I wonder why my science teachers in high school and college didn't make science this beautiful and enthralling!

If you are in the Philadelphia area this is a must-see. The show runs through May 6th at Twenty-Two Gallery, 236 South 22nd Street, Philadelphia. Phone (215)772-1911. The gallery hours are Wednesday - Sunday 12pm-6pm or by appointment.

Seashells

Seashells

Can you tell where my head has been since returning from vacation? Something about the bright Caribbean colors used in all the decorating and artwork down on Sanibel Island has infused my work this past week. I don't know how long it will affect my painting but I really am enjoying it. And because for the most part, beach paintings sell at the beach (and I don't live near the beach) these will not go to any of my galleries. They are for sale through my website. Click on the link and then click on "still life."

I hope you enjoy and have a great weekend!

So I just back from spending a week in beautiful Sanibel Island, Florida. I have wanted to retire there since I was 30 years old. Every time I go back there it just reinforces the fact that I want to live there....even when I spent a week there in August. This was a really special trip because my parents, sister, and in-laws all met us there to spend the week. The weather was splendid. Days were filled with 20 mile bike rides across the island with no humidity. Nights were filled with good food, wine, political debate, and stories of the good old days. All the cares of the world at home put on hold. It was fabulous!

So I brought home these gorgeous sea shells and am extending my vacation for another week by painting these beautiful wonders of nature. I am thinking of calling it "Seriously Twisted" because of all the beautiful twists and turns in these shells, and because that is how I felt when I came home to the forecast of SNOW in the Northeast.

I will post it when I'm done and I hope you like it!

P.S.  Any suggestions for painting a black background would be welcome as I have never done that!

Timmons Gallery Demonstration

Timmons Gallery Demonstration

I thought I'd do a quick blog post (between finishing my tax returns and demonstrations) to share the painting that was used in the demos this week. I had been nervous for a few weeks but was very happy after the two days of presentations. It was so wonderful. Rich and Julie Timmons have opened this phenomenal gallery in Doylestown. If you are close by or ever in the area you have to take the time to visit. The interior is amazing, with three floors of beautiful art. They put on a scrumptious tea, yesterday and today. I am so happy to report that both days were full, even overflowing. We may put together another tea in May for the people we could not fit in today.

I was very nervous about public speaking, since my last speech was given in 1982 in high school on "My Role in Upholding the Constitution" for the VFW. I won the contest, but discovered I had terrible stage fright! So, it wasn't until yesterday that I got back on stage, being the only one talking. I think today went better in terms of steadiness of my voice, and I was even enjoying it at the end. The two groups of ladies were so interested and asked a lot of good questions. Some were artists, most were not. They all made me feel so good afterwards, and I think they enjoyed the demo. I think I could do this again!
